Having finished our fifteenth show on the airwaves of frequency radio last week, I thought it was finally time to reflect on our progress and future, before our next show airs on Thursday at 6pm.
The first idea to start a radio show came almost on a whim, we decided about 5 minutes before the start of the first meeting that we were going to go check it out. Arriving fashionably late, we noticed a few familiar faces on the panel listening to the pitches for shows; which was incredibly lucky as we didn’t exactly sell ourselves very well with the first impression. After arriving a little clueless, we delivered a decent pitch on the spot, but my co-host, Dean, almost shot us in the foot by asking; “Can we drink?” and “Can we swear?”. The panel exchanged a few nervous glances, but our friends who worked for the station had backed up our idea and we were given the go-ahead.
A couple of weeks of shameless plugging and a training session or two and we were in the studio, incredibly nervous, but ready to deliver the first show. The first show itself was a little shaky, but adrenaline got us through and it was a success, friends sent messages of support such as “herb for radio 1”. Fantastic. The balance of top new house music, old classics and myself and Dean humorously dissecting each others lives on air seemed to be a winning combination.
As our number of shows has started to mount up, we’ve trialed many different segments and features, including: ‘Unfortunate things that happen to Dean’, due to his ability to attract danger and misfortune in his day to day life and various stories about myself, due to me seemingly being a beacon for ‘undesirable characters’ whilst out and about. Another major talking point of our show is our flat and its inhabitants. Now don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of love and respect for them all, but its a very erratic and eccentric existence living with my flat mates. Something out of sorts seems to happen every week, but of course this makes perfect conversation for our amateur radio.
Obviously, for those who aren’t familiar with our antics and routines, the show may seem a little bit of a strange concept; so we aim to add elements of weird news from around the world and particularly around the Preston and UCLan area. You might think this sounds a bit dull but believe me, enough daft and amusing things happen in this odd little city to fill the 2 hours alone, and that’s just with a walk to the shops.
So now you know the show promises to be at least a little factual and witty, I guess your next step is to listen in and see what the fuss is about, yeah? Now I don’t promise a groundbreaking show of radio 1 standard, but I can guarantee new music every week and if you listen to our show weekly, its rare you’ll hear the same song twice (in fact, its a policy I’m rather anal about).
In the future, we have plans to play mixes from top local DJ’s (so if you are one get in touch!), along with frequent guest appearances and maybe even our own night in club somewhere. One can dream, so keep a ear out!
For now though, a massive thank you for all the support over the weeks and if its Thursday and nearly 6PM, listen in here: http://www.frequencyradio.co.uk
